As local resources become vastly used, few of still primitive merchants decide to leave the town for exploration. Most of them don't return, but a new metal is found. A man with some iron ores unexpectedly gets praised and decent after the local patriarch assings new and higher value to the new coin and building structure improvement material (though in rock-ish form as is, yet to extract iron from it), and a large natural limepit is found nearby.

"now that the town is bigger, i can't remember the locations of anything!"
"what if we make something that tells the location of thing in the town?"
*you unlocked map... we don't have ink or anything yet so they use the rocks. not very efficient.*

Chalk extracted from the limepit gets discovered an use in inscribing on hard surfaces smoothly. Various borders on the wooden map are now marked with chalk, decreasing the confusion and need of such rock amounts. Coal gets replaced from the main use in education.
